"Rap music can either be really hard or hardly real.", takto začína biografia umelca, ktorého označil Brian Brater, spoluzakladateľ Rawkus Records, za potenciálne najväčšiu hviezdu v histórii vydavateľstva, odkaz vtesnaný na album prirovnal k tomu z klasiky Blackstar. Úcta k ženám, badateľný vplyv viery v Boha koreniaci i v portugalskom pôvode, interakcia pohlaví, alkoholizmus, autizmus, detská pornografia. Témy nie zrovna typické pre new schol rap, a navyše náchylné na klišovité podanie. Nie však v prípade tohto albumu. Ako trefne poznamenáva myspace profil, spoločenská reflexia je možná i bez vulgarizmov. Pri tipe na album je už pomaly zvykom uviesť zopár citátov na ilustráciu, tu som nemal na výber, než uverejniť text celej skladby ... Of Gods And Girls vznikal počas tour s materskou skupinou The Procussions, momentálne aktívnou v Los Angeles, kam sa presťahovali z Colorada. Ani 237 dolárov na účte mu nebránilo v založení vlastnej organizácie Constance Campaign zaoberajúcej sa ľudskými právami, k čomu ho inšpiroval príbeh 13-ročného filipínskeho dievčaťa, opísaný i v jednej z najsilnejších skladieb vôbec, Constance. Rawkus Records má i napriek odsúdeniu zo strany niektorých bývalých chránencov určite svoje pevné miesto v hudobnej histórii, a ak sa po znovuoživení plánuje venovať vydávaniu hudby takéhoto žánru, čoskoro zrejme odpadne, v resp. bude rozšírená, i nálepka labelu, ktorý žiaril koncom 90-tych rokov a štartoval kariéru ľudí ako Talib Kweli, Hi-Tek či El-P. Nejdem sa oháňať označeniami ako album roka, Of Gods And Girls je totiž niekde úplne inde, mimo bežnej predstavy o dnešnom rape, a nemusí to nevyhnutne znamenať niečo tak kvalitatívne prevyšujúce všetko ostatné, niekedy naozaj stačí byť odlišný ...
